Drukpa FC Opens BPL Campaign with Thrilling 2-1 Victory

Sunday, March 1, 2026|Match Correspondent

Drukpa FC kicked off their inaugural season under the new identity with a pulsating 2-1 victory over Thimphu City FC at Changlimithang Stadium.

Captain Chencho Gyeltshen opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a curling free-kick that left the Thimphu City goalkeeper rooted to the spot. The home fans erupted as the first competitive goal under the Drukpa FC banner found the back of the net.

Thimphu City equalized shortly after half-time through a well-worked counter-attack, but Drukpa FC's resilience shone through. In the 72nd minute, striker Biren Kumar Basnet latched onto a brilliant through ball from Thinley Dorji and slotted home to restore the lead.

The defense, marshalled superbly by Sangay Wangdi, held firm in the closing stages to secure all three points.

"The atmosphere was incredible," said head coach Karma Tshering. "The fans gave us a 12th man today, and the players responded with heart and quality."

Attendance: 4,200 — a record for the club.
